Construction is in the home stretch for a new affordable and supportive housing complex at the former site of the Umeya Rice Cake Company in In Downtown.
The project, which is being developed by local non-profit Little Tokyo Service Center, is located at 412-426 S. Crocker Street. Dubbed "The Umeya," for the site's former occupant, the new seven-story edifice will feature 175 apartments studio, one-, and two-bedroom unit apartments when it opens.
All of the apartments are to cater to low-, very low-, and extremely low-income households, with half to serve as permanent supportive housing.
FSY Architects is designing the building, which is arranged with a V-shaped footprint, creating room for two courtyards at street level. Plans also call for 13,000 square feet of ground floor space dedicated to community uses, retail, and service providers. A new mural by Skid Row artist Showzart will adorn the wall of the apartment complex.
The project is among a handful of new affordable housing developments from LTSC now in the construction stage, joining projects at 823 Cleveland Street in Chinatown and just north of the Japanese American National Museum.
