Move-ins have commenced for a new affordable housing complex at the former site of the Umeya Rice Cake Company in Downtown Los Angeles.
The Umeya, developed by Little Tokyo Service Center at 412-426 S. Crocker Street, consists of a seven-story building featuring 175 apartments studio, one-, and two-bedroom unit apartments.
All of the apartments are earmarked for occupancy by low-, very low-, and extremely low-income households, with half serving as supportive housing.
"Our family business has been a part of the Little Tokyo neighborhood since 1918" said Umeya president Rex Hamano. "Given Umeya’s history and the community who supported us for nearly 100 years, the two are forever inseparable. We are truly excited to see the fruits of LTSC advancing their proud mission towards community revitalization and cultural preservation for generations to come.”
FSY Architects' design for the building includes a building with a V-shaped footprint, with two courtyards located at street level. The podium-type building includes 13,000 square feet of ground floor space dedicated to community uses, retail, and service providers, and will have a mural by Skid Row artist Showzart at its exterior. Plans also call for an exhibit honoring the Umeya Rice Cake Company.
The project joints other LTSC developments now in the construction stage such as an apartment building at 823 Cleveland Street in Chinatown and a mixed-use complex just north of the Japanese American National Museum.
