A half-year after we last checked in, the concrete frame of a big senior housing complex is nearly complete in Warner Center.
The Variel, a joint venture between South Bay Partners, LAMB Properties, and Columbia Pacific Advisors, is located at 6233 Variel Avenue which was formerly improved with a series of small office buildings. The new eight-story edifice will feature 215 independent living units, 94 assisted living units, and 27 memory care units.
VTBS Architects is designing the complex, which will include multiple on-site restaurants, a swimming pool, a gym, screening rooms, multiple courtyards, and parking. Renderings depict a modern mid-rise structure wrapped in a series of geometric protrusions.
At the time of its groundbreaking in early 2020, completion of the complex was expected in Winter 2021.
The Variel is one of three senior housing developments planned within the Warner Center community, joining a proposed a proposed 17-acre complex from Speiker Senior Partners at Canoga Avenue and Burbank Boulevard and a 190 senior apartments planned one block east on De Soto Avenue.
In addition to its Warner Center project, South Bay Partners is also planning a 192-unit senior living complex called The Bellwood near Century City.
