Nine months after breaking ground in Culver City, the expansion of the Wende Museum is starting to take shape just west of Veterans Memorial Park.

The project, located at 10858 Culver Boulevard, is adding a new community center to the Wende Museum campus, which is both an art museum and an archive of Cold War artifacts. The Glorya Kaufman Creative Community Center, named after one of the project's principal supporters, will be a 7,000-square-foot space featuring a live performance theater, a demonstration garden, and art spaces for veterans.

AUX Architecture is designing the project, which is depicted in renderings as a contemporary low-rise structure with an exterior of painted stucco, concrete, and aluminum. Plans also call for a series of terrace decks.

In addition to the new community center, the Wende Museum's expansion also calls for converting part of the property's community garden into six apartments - averaging 325 square feet in size - which would be set aside for low-income, homeless artist residents.

At the time of its groundbreaking, completion was expected in 2023.
