Construction is slated to begin at year's end on a long-awaited restoration of the historic Warner Grand Theatre in Downtown San Pedro.
The project, led by SPF:architects, was the subject of a groundbreaking ceremony on December 17, which also included officials with the City of Los Angeles. Completed in 1931 at 478 W. 6th Street, the venue was originally designed in the Art Deco-Moderne style by architect B. Marcus Priteca, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Since 1996, the building has been owned by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, which is managing the restoration effort alongside the city's Bureau of Engineering.
“As someone who has had the privilege of restoring another of Marcus Priteca’s masterpieces—the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood—this project is deeply personal,” said SPF founder Zoltan Pali. “It exemplifies the power of design to unite a community. We are honored to work alongside the City of Los Angeles and the people of San Pedro in preserving the Warner Grand Theatre, ensuring it remains a place where memories are created, stories are shared, and the spirit of togetherness thrives for generations.”
The restoration is focused on retaining the theatre's Art Deco details, while simultaneously implementing upgrades including ADA accessibility, new restrooms, a guest lounge, and a roof terrace.
Los Angeles City Councilmember, whose partents met at the Warner Grand, announced that reopening of the theatre is expected in 2026.
