The sea of construction cranes near Staples Center and L.A. Live is about to get another tree.

Fulton Street Ventures, the American affiliate of Chinese developer R&F Properties, is beginning work on a 28-story residential tower in Downtown's booming South Park neighborhood.  Protective fencing is currently being set up around the project site - a parking lot at 1133 S. Hope Street - which will eventually hold 200 condominiums above a parking garage, amenities and 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

The property was originally entitled by the Canadian real estate firm Amacon, which commissioned Vancouver's Chris Dikeakos Architects to design the modern 330-foot tower.

A timeline for the mixed-use project is unclear.

The tower will rise less than one block north of 1212 Flower Street, where Onni Group is in the midst of construction on a similar high-rise complex.

Large multi-tower developments are also underway two blocks west on Figueroa Street, including Circa and Oceanwide Plaza.
