Less than eight months after announcing plans to establish its new practice facility and headquarters campus in El Segundo, a groundbreaking ceremony held this week marks the start of construction for the new home of the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers.

The more than $270-million project, which is being developed by Continental Development Corporation and Mar Ventures, Inc., will rise on a 14-acre site near the intersection of El Segundo Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway which was formerly part of Raytheon's El Segundo campus.

The Gensler Sports-designed complex will be centered on a 145,000-square-foot main building featuring offices, a hospitality club, eSports gaming and content studios, and a 3,100-square-foot media center. It will be surrounded by three natural grass fields with seating for more than 5,000 spectators, as well as parking for 348 vehicles.

“The City of El Segundo is home to an unparalleled roster of professional sports teams including the Lakers, Kings, Giltinis, and Premiere Lacrosse League,” said El Segundo Mayor Drew Boyles in remarks. “The Los Angeles Chargers and this new, cutting-edge sports campus will further establish El Segundo’s legacy of game-changing innovation in business and technology. El Segundo will be the only city in America with headquarters and practice facilities of professional football, basketball, and hockey teams."

Completion of the Chargers campus, which will sit roughly seven miles west of SoFi Stadium, is expected in Spring 2024.

Continental Development and Mar Ventures, the developers behind the campus, are also planning other projects in El Segundo, including a mixed-use housing development on Pacific Coast Highway and a proposed 300,000-square-foot office campus on Rosecrans Avenue.

Not to be outdone, L.A.'s other NFL team is also slated to build a headquarters of its own. Rams owner Stan Kroenke recently paid $150 million for the 35-acre site of the Promenade Mall in Warner Center, which is entitled for redevelopment housing, offices, retail, hotels, and a 10,000-seat entertainment venue.
