Recent years have seen the construction of more than one thousand apartments and a new office tower next to Metro's La Cienega/Jefferson Station. Soon, tenants and the Wrapper and Cumulus developments will have some more space to store their stuff.
This week, Public Storage submitted an application to the L.A. Department of City Planning seeking approvals to redevelop an existing storage complex located just east of Ballona Creek at 5741 W. Jefferson Boulevard. Plans call for razing a pair of existing one- and two-story structures, clearing the way for a new six-story edifice featuring just over 300,000 square feet of space - including 6,750 square feet of street-fronting retail space facing Jefferson Boulevard.

Ware Malcomb is designing 5741 Jefferson, which has the familiar orange ubiquitous to Public Storage properties.
Required entitlements for the project include a height district change and a zone variance to permit the continued use of the site for storage - items which will require the approval of the Los Angeles City Planning Commission.
The first hints of the proposed development emerged in July 2022, when then-Councilmember Herb Wesson initiated the variance process for the project via a motion which was adopted later that year.

While this property may serve tenants at Wrapper and Cumulus, as well as a number of other developments in the works near La Cienega/Jefferson Station, Public Storage is giving up on one of its sites on the opposite side of the Metro right-of-way. In late 2020, Public Storage sold a nearby property at 3401 S. La Cienega Boulevard to Australian construction and development giant Lendlease, which has since entitled the property for redevelopment with offices and housing.
