Cocoon, a local real estate firm with a penchant for small-scale apartment buildings in Gardena, has broken ground on its second development in the neighborhood.
A skeleton crew of workers recently appeared on a long-vacant lot at 13919 S. Normandie Avenue, where a new three-story building with 20 studio apartments is set to rise. The new building, named Cocoon 20 for reasons which should be obvious, will offer studio layouts - some of which will feature a patio.
DE Architects is designing the project, which is depicted in renderings as a contemporary low-rise structure clad in white stucco with blue accents.
The project, which is owned by an entity affiliated with West Realty Group of Los Angeles, is one of three new Cocoon developments in the works for the area. A larger 121-unit development was approved last year for a site along Western Avenue, and the company's future portfolio also includes a 97-unit development just south of El Segundo Boulevard.
The first Cocoon project in Gardena, which made its debut last year, is a 63-unit development located at 16819 S. Normandie Avenue.
Cocoon's apartment building sits one block north of Azalea Walk, a new for-sale housing complex from Olson Homes, and three blocks north of Rosecrans Avenue.
