A community presentation held on February 1 unveiled details of a Vision Zero safety overhaul which will bring approximately two miles of protected bike lanes to Hollywood Boulevard.
The Hollywood Boulevard Safety and Mobility Project - led by LADOT along with the offices of City Councilmembers Hugo Soto-Martinez and Nithya Raman - applies to a stretch of Hollywood Boulevard between Fountain Avenue in the east to Gower Street in the west. According to a project website, that corridor saw 53 fatal or severe collisions between 2010 and 2019.
Plans call for trading out vehicular travel lanes for bollard- and parking-protected bike lanes, potentially narrowing the street to one travel lane in each direction in some stretches. Others segments would maintain vehicular travel lanes in their current configuration and remove curbside parking to make way for the bike lanes.
Other elements of the project include new speed humps, left turn calming treatments, upgrades to existing crosswalks, and the addition of at least three new pedestrian crosswalk signals.
Implementation of the improvements is tentatively expected to occur in late 2024, per the project website.
Although it is a separate project, the Vision Zero improvements are expected to complement a planned overhaul of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which stretches further to the west on Hollywood Boulevard to La Brea Avenue. The proposed plan for the Walk of Fame calls for building wider sidewalks, curb bulb outs, new event plazas, and planting another row of street trees.
