A presentation to the Pasadena Design Commission offers a look at the final design for National CORE's proposed senior affordable housing complex at the intersection of Holly and Ramona Streets.
The project, which has the addresses of both 275 E. Holly Street and 280 Ramona Street, would rise from the former YWCA site directly across the street from Pasadena City Hall. Plans now call for the construction of a five-story, 100-unit apartment building without on-site parking. The studio and one-bedroom dwellings would be split between low-income senior households and senior citizens experiencing homelessness.
The latest iteration of the project has been reduced from the 106 apartments planned when last seen before the Design Commission in 2022 - already a reduction from the 112-unit concept the city selected for the site in 2020. However, also removed from the plans is a 50-car parking garage, which is replaced with an on-grade loading area.
Onyx Architects remains the project, has continued to evolve based on feedback, reducing the scale of its corner towers, simplifying elements such as its entry forecourt, and refining wall setbacks. Common features include social services spaces, a community room, a recreation room, and a large courtyard.
A staff report recommends approval of final design review.
National CORE's other recent projects include affordable housing developments in East Los Angeles, San Pedro, and Inglewood.
