One year after its ceremonial groundbreaking, the first signs of construction on the Sixth Street Viaduct PARC are apparent in new social media posts.
PARC - short for "Park, Arts, and River Connectivity" - is an $82-million project which will create 12 acres of new public green space below the viaduct. That total includes seven acres on the west bank of the Los Angeles River in the Arts District and five acres in Boyle Heights to the east.
Hargreaves Jones is designing PARC, which will include sports fields and courts, picnic areas, and event space, on the eastern side of the river and a performance lawn, a dog park, and fitness equipment on the west side. Images posted to the project's Facebook page show work in progress for the Leonard Hill Arts Plaza, a space directly below the bridge which is named for the late developer who donated money for the project.
At the time of the project's groundbreaking, the Bureau of Engineering that construction would take roughly two-and-a-half years to be completed.
The new park space may be complemented by several new infrastructure projects in the works along the L.A. River corridor, most notably a planned segment of the Los Angeles River bike path and a proposed extension of Metro's B and D Lines to 6th Street.
