Just north of Manchester Avenue in South Los Angeles, wood framing is taking shape for a new affordable housing development at 800 W. 85th Street.
The project from Domus Development, located on what was previously a vacant lot on the west side of Hoover Street, consists of a four-story building that will 90 studio and two-bedroom apartments and surface parking for 14 vehicles when completed.
The apartments are described in an April 2023 Housing Department staff report as permanent supportive housing, priced for households earning up to 50 percent of the area median income level.
KFA Architecture is designing the project, called Domus Ambrosia, whichw ould include a street-fronting courtyard along HOover Street and a larger interior courtyard for use by residents along the western side of the property. A rendering depicts a contemporary low-rise structure.
The project was previously part of the portfolio of Skid Row Housing Trust, the once-prolific developer and operator of permanent supportive housing that dramatically collapsed in late 2022. The Ambrosia site was among many properties that found themselves in the hands of other developers after the non-profit's struggles came to light.
