At a ceremony late last month, developers Highridge Costa and Western Community Housing marked the marked the completion of the Main Street Apartments in South Los Angeles.
The project, located at 5501 S. Main Street, consists of a five-story edifice featuring 56 studio and two-bedroom apartments reserved for homeless veterans and families earning at or below 30 and 50 percent of the area median income level. The complex also includes a single one-bedroom apartment for an on-site manager.
“The grand opening of permanent supportive housing at Main Street Apartments is a great testament on how public-private partnerships can provide a legacy of attractive, safe and affordable housing for our veterans and their families,” said Highridge Costa president Moe Mohanna in a news release. “Over the life of the community, we anticipate that the stability, services and programs offered at Main Street Apartments will assist hundreds of veterans and families in the Los Angeles area to rebuild their lives.”
The complex also includes 1,500 square feet of ground-floor commercial space - reserved for a local non-profit organization or use as flex space by residents - as well as offices for case managers, a terrace, a lobby, and a mural by local artist Kristine Campbell.
Egan Simon Architecture designed the low-rise structure, which also fronts on 55th Street.
Highridge Costa's other recent developments include a mixed-use supportive housing development rising just south of Exposition Park and a similar project built near the intersection of 21st Street and Central Avenue.
