A grand opening ceremony held on November 13 marks the debut of Estrella Springs, a new permanent supportive housing complex for veterans in the City of Santa Ana.
The adaptive reuse project from Jamboree Housing Corp., located at 1108 N. Harbor Boulevard, converted a former Budget Inn into 89 studio apartments reserved for renters earning up to 30 percent of the area median income level. A city news release indicates that the project included a full interior and structural renovation, adding kitchens, new heating and air conditioning, cabinetry, paint, flooring, and appliances.
“I want to thank Jamboree Housing and all of the partners that made Estrella Springs possible,” Mayor Valerie Amezcua said. “With the completion of Estrella Springs, the City of Santa Ana has now helped build over 100 permanent supportive housing units specifically for homeless veterans. Santa Ana is now home to the largest number of permanent supportive housing units for formerly homeless veterans in all of Orange County.”
In addition to adaptive reuse, ground-up construction brought a new community center to the property, including offices for service providers, and a lounge. Other amenities include a computer lab, fitness stations, a half basketball court, and a community garden.
Funding for Estrella Springs came from public and private sources, including the City of Santa Ana, Chase Bank, Red Stone Equity Partners, the California Department of Housing and Community Development, CalOptima Health, the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, the Home Depot Foundation, and the Orange County Housing Finance Trust.
