On November 21, the City of Long Beach and developer Mercy Housing California commenced work on a new affordable housing complex on the eastern side of the city's downtown.

The project, located at 300 Alamitos Avenue, is being developed as a joint venture with CTY Housing. Plans call for the construction of a five-story building featuring 82 one-bedroom apartments reserved for low-income and homeless seniors.

“300 Alamitos will be a safe, dignified place seniors can call home,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a news release. “This new development underscores the City’s unwavering commitment to creating more affordable housing options and enhancing livability throughout Long Beach.”

Slated for completion in Summer 2026, the project was purchased by Mercy Housing using $5 million provided by the Long Beach Community Investment Company.

The new development will rise a few blocks north of Long Beach's new tallest tower - the 35-story Shoreline Gateway development - is not the first proposal for this site. Previously, a seven-story market-rate development with 77 residential units was proposed for the property.

Mercy Housing California is no stranger to Long Beach. The developer previously built a similar senior housing complex at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
