Earlier this month, Jonathan Rose Companies and Wakefield Housing & Development Corp. announced the debut of 1999, a new affordable housing complex located in the Westlake community.
Named for its address at 1999 W. 3rd Street, the project consists of a seven-story building featuring 137 apartments as well as common areas like a fitness studio, a yoga room, and a central atrium. The new housing is to be reserved for renters earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income level.
“Amid a city-wide housing crisis, Jonathan Rose Companies is proud to announce the completion of 1999, a fully affordable, all-electric building that will house more than 130 Los Angeles families,” said Jonathan Rose Companies managing director of development Jenny Wu in a news release. “In addition to its 10,000 square feet of community space, the building was constructed using non-toxic materials and includes fresh air intake systems for units to ensure higher air quality to keep residents healthy and safe. We are grateful to our development partner, Wakeland Housing & Development Corporation, for their collaboration on the project and we are excited for what the future holds for 1999 and the greater Los Angeles community.”
In addition to being an all-electric building, 1999 also incorporates low-flow plumbing fixtures, native planting, and a greywater-ready irrigation system.
Brooks + Scarpa is designing the podium-type building, with Tina Chee Landscape Studio serving as landscape studio and Argent / Graham as a consultant. The new construction is connected to the neighboring Miramar Towers, and existing housing complex under the same ownership, through a breezeway.
1999 is the first California development for Jonathan Rose Companies, and the latest in a recent string of affordable housing developments from Wakeland in the Los Angeles area
