Earlier this year, Hawthorne Nursery closed after nearly a century in business, leaving South Bay residents with a green thumb in need of a new place to find their plants. However, the property left behind could soon provide opportunities for prospective South Bay residents in need of a home.
Earth movers are now clearing the two lots that the nursery once called home, which span a combined 3.15 acres at 4159 and 4120 El Segundo Boulevard. Under plans reviewed last year by the City of Hawthorne, the property is primed for redevelopment with up to 68 for-sale townhomes.

City records indicate that Melia Homes is developing the project, which would include a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom townhomes accompanied by parking for more than 140 vehicles, per a report given last year to the Hawthorne Planning Commission.
Summa Architecture is designing the project, which would consist of modern three-story structures.
At the Planning Commission hearing, a company representative indicated that the full project would likely be completed over a period of two years.
Melia Homes, based out of Irvine, has previously developed two similar townhome projects in the neighboring City of Gardena.
