The WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks will join their NBA counterparts in setting up a new training facility in El Segundo, the city announced this week.
The 55,000-square-foot facility, estimated to cost $150 million, will be built in partnership with architecture firm Gensler and real estate services company Transwestern. Completion is expected in 2027.
“El Segundo is well known for its dynamic and diverse economy, and we’re thrilled that the WNBA’s marquee franchise, the L.A. Sparks, is building its new state-of-the-art headquarters and training facility here,” shared El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel in a news release. "This facility will set a new standard in the league, reflecting the Sparks’ commitment to excellence on and off the court and reinforcing El Segundo’s status as a premier destination for professional sports.”
Billed as the largest investment in a facility of this type for a women's professional sports team, the project is planned along Rosecrans Avenue just east of Sepulveda Boulevard, within the Beach Cities Media Campus site. It will be developed within Continental Park, a collection of office and mixed-use properties which line the Rosecrans corridor at the southern edge of El Segundo.
Per a news release, plans call for an outdoor spa pool, nap rooms, hydrotherapy suites, two regulation WNBA courts, a circular locker room, a weight room, and a design intended to maximize views of surrounding mountains. The interior of the space is being designed by Studio Blitz.
“This training facility exemplifies athlete-centered design at the highest standard, where every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to support the WNBA athletes," said Gensler architect Susan Han in a statement. "It represents the next generation of holistic support, designed to elevate each athlete’s journey towards being their very best.”
El Segundo, long home to the training facilities of the NBA's Lakers and NHL's Kings, recently welcomed the NFL's Chargers to a purpose-built campus not far north of the future Sparks facility.
