Construction has commenced for the first component of the long-awaited Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza mall redevelopment.
Harridge Development Group announced the start of work in a ceremony featuring multiple city officials earlier this month. Plans call for the construction of a series of 92 homes on a portion of the property along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Santa Rosalia Drive, and Marlton Avenue, as well as the demolition of the mall's former Sears building.
The initial homes are a portion of what is slated for this area. Harridge has approvals for a total of 290 residential units on this block, with 10 percent of homes to be reserved for households earning up to 60 and 80 percent of the area median income level.
Danielian Associates is designing the homes, while Border serves as the project's landscape architects.

Harridge also has plans for a 636-unit apartment complex on the northern side of the mall at Crenshaw Boulevard and 39th Street.
Harridge, which purchased the 42-acre mall property roughly five years ago, acquired approved entitlements to build up to 330,000 square feet of shops and restaurants, more than 140,000 square feet of offices, up to 400 hotel rooms, and 961 homes on the land.
