Construction officially commenced last week for Jubilo Village, Culver City's first new affordable housing development in more than a decade.
Community Corp. of Santa Monica is designing the project, which is being developed on land owned by Culver-Palms United Methodist Church at 4464 Sepulveda Boulevard. Plans call for the new construction of a six-story building featuring 95 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, including 51 units reserved for renters earning between 50 and 80 percent of the area median income level, and 42 units for those earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income level.
In addition to housing, the project will create new facilities for the church, including multipurpose rooms available to both the congregation and the church. Other project components include a children's play area, a community garden, common laundry areas, and parking for 56 vehicles.
“Culver-Palms UMC has a long history of championing a wide variety of social justice and community-building activities,” said Rev. Johan Dodge, the pastor of Culver-Palms United Methodist Church. “We are honored to provide two-thirds of our property for Jubilo Village, which will become home to a beautiful, diverse group of neighbors who will enrich Culver City for at least the next 75 years.”
FSY Architects is designing the contemporary podium-type development.
Completion is expected in 2028.
The project is being developed as a result of SB 4, which streamlines the development of housing projects on land owned by religious institutions. Community Corp. of Santa Monica is working on a similar project also located on church-owned land in Del Rey.
