At a ceremony yesterday in Downtown Los Angeles, city officials marked the topping out of the The Broad's $100-million expansion.
The project, which broke ground in 2025, consists of a 50,000-square-foot addition overlooking Hope Street at the rear of the museum. When completed, the project will expand The Broad's total space by roughly 70 percent.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro, which designed the original portion of the museum fronting 2nd Street and Grand Avenue, is also the architecture firm for the expansion. The addition flips opts for an exterior of concrete, in lieu of the exterior of fiberglass-reinforced panels seen on the original. Plans also call for two open-air courtyards at the top floor, as well a ground-floor event space for live programming, and an art storage gallery which will allow visitors to interact with parts of the museum previously hidden away.
“Building the original Broad was one of the greatest achievements in MATT Construction’s history, so to be trusted with this expansion is an extraordinary honor," said MATT Construction chairman Steve Matt in a news release, whose firm is building the project. "Liz Diller's design pushes every boundary. It requires our teams to bring their highest level of craft and ingenuity to every detail. Watching our people rise to that challenge, on a project this meaningful to Los Angeles, is what this work is all about.”
Completion is expected before the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The Broad, which was founded by the late Eli Broad and his wife Edythe, boasts a collection of more than 2,000 works of art from the 1950s through present, including pieces from Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Takashi Murakami, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol.
The project is one of two cultural landmarks now taking shape within the Bunker Hill, joining the Colburn School's $335-million expansion designed by the late Frank Gehry.
