Three months since our last update, another milestone has been reached for the Colburn School's $335-million expansion in Downtown Los Angeles.

The Colburn School, along with McCarthy Building Cos., has announced the concrete topping-out of the Colburn Center, now taking shape at the intersection of 2nd and Hill Streets on Bunker Hill. The steel-frame building is on track for completion in Fall 2027.

Designed by Frank Gehry, the project will include a 1,000-seat concert hall, a smaller 100-seat theater, and multiple studios for instruction and rehearsal. The larger performance venue is to be named for the project's primary donors, Terri and Jerry Kohl.

At the exterior, plans call for a a rooftop garden and a publicly-accessible garden accessible from Hill Street - spaces that will double as outdoor venues for performances, receptions, and other types of events.

The project expands upon the Colburn School's main campus on Grand Avenue, and joins other Gehry-designed Downtown projects such as The Grand (located directly west across Olive Street) and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The Colburn Center is also the latest in a string of additions to the Bunker Hill area that have emerged within the past decade, including Grand Park, the Emerson apartment tower and The Broad contemporary art museum, which is also in the midst of an expansion.
