A presentation to the Los Angeles Board of Cultural Affairs Commisioners unveils new renderings for a planned expansion of the Watts Towers Art Center campus.

The $22-million project, which recently secured sufficient construction funding with a $10-million grant from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' Bezos Earth Fund, calls for the addition of 30,000 square feet of new park space to the campus through the conversion of a former railroad spur. The expanded green space would add new walking paths, seating areas, art features, lighting, drinking fountains, bike racks, and other site improvements.

Studio Zewde is designing the project, which is poised to break ground this year per a landing page on the firm's website.

Completion is expected before the 2028 Summer Olympics, Mayor Bass announced earlier this year.

The project represents the first revamp of the five-acre Watts Towers Art Center campus since 1961, and will be carried out by the City of Los Angeles in partnership with the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust. Planning and outreach for the project began in 2012.
