After four years of quiet, the owners of Gibraltar Square in Beverly Hills are back with revised plans to convert the mid-century office building into a hotel.
Located at 9111 Wilshire Boulevard, was originally developed between the 1950s and 1960s as the headquarters of Gibraltar Savings and Loan. Its oldest structures are a low-rise bank building and cantilevered 10-story office tower, both of which were designed by Pereira and Luckman. The property was later expanded with the addition of another bank building, designed by Maxwell Starkman and later reworked by Morphosis in the mid-1980s when converted into the now-defunct Kate Mantilini Restaurant.
In 2020, West Hollywood-based real estate developer Charles Company received approvals to convert the property into a 154-room hotel with restaurant space and amenities, while the former Kate Mantilini space would be revived as a restaurant. While heavy construction for the reuse project has yet to commence, the entitlement has remained active in subsequent years through permits for refurbishments of portions of the building in pursuit of the hotel development.
Revised plans, as detailed in a presentation to the Beverly Hills Planning Commission, maintain the overall vision for the site, but reduce the number of guest rooms from 154 to 147, and also call for reconfiguring a pool deck at the third floor and adding a nearly 5,000 square-foot restaurant through an 11th-story addition to the building.
OfficeUntitled remains the architect for the project, which maintains the same appearance as what was initially approved in 2020.
City approvals are required for a revised conditional use permit, as well as a new historic incentive permit to allow a building of up to 149 feet in height at this location.
Charles Company's other proposed projects in the near vicinity include a proposed high-rise on the Sunset Strip and the Melrose Triangle development. A court order is also forcing the developer to finally demolish a long-vacant shopping mall in Hawthorne which the company has previously targeted for redevelopment.
