Last month, the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission approved a project which will transform a shuttered elementary school campus in unincorporated Covina into housing.
The project from RC Homes, named The Cove at Clydebank for its address at 5034 N. Clydebank Avenue, calls for the construction of 104 residential condominiums on an 8.5-acre property.
Project entitlements include density bonus incentives to permit more housing than would otherwise be allowed by zoning rules. In exchange, 16 of the new homes are to be set aside for households earning up to 80 percent of the area median income level.
Angeleno Associates is designing The Cove, which would consist of two-story structures arranged around a network of private roads. Plans show multiple shared green spaces across the site.
RC Homes has pursued number of similar housing projects across Los Angeles County in recent years, including a 37-home development in San Dimas.
The project is also part of a broader trend of housing developments taking the place of shuttered school campuses in Los Angeles County, as enrollment plummets along with the pricey region's population of children.
