The Los Angeles City Council has upheld CIM Group's plan to expand an under-construction apartment complex in Hollywood against the objections of Emerson College.
The building, located from a corner lot at 6007 W. Sunset Boulevard, was initially approved in 2022 as a seven-story building containing up to 109 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments above parking for 196 vehicles, and approximately 14,600 square feet of ground-floor retail space. After breaking ground, CIM filed for a new application aiming to reconfigure the interior of the building and an eighth floor to create 172 total apartments.
CIM's request, which was granted in August, was subsequently appealed by Emerson College, which has its west coast campus across Sunset Boulevard. Emerson's appeal contended that CIM had engaged in unpermitted construction and violated land use regulations by receiving an approval without a public hearing.
In a response, CIM contends that Emerson College’s true objections to the project are regarding view corridors looking northward from its campus. The project was filed utilizing the enhanced administrative review pathway recently created by the Planning Department, which does not require a public hearing, or approval by the City Planning Commission.
The project sits across the street from 23-story Sunset and Gordon apartment tower, a high-rise initially developed by CIM Group which is also adding new housing within its existing building envelope under recently-filed plans. Other projects in the near vicinity include The Star on Sunset, a proposed Norman Foster-designed office tower.
