A year after we last dropped by, wood framing is largely complete for a new apartment complex just west of the L.A. River and the I-5 Freeway in Silver Lake.

The Riverglen II project, first initiated with the City of Los Angeles back in 2009, spans a roughly 1,500-foot-long site along Riverside Drive between Fletcher Drive and Glendale Boulevard. When complete, the new four-story buildings will feature a total of 120 one- and two-bedroom dwellings, perched above a two-level concrete podium.

GMPA Architects is designing the apartment complex, which connects three distinct buildings with glass-enclosed modules. Those shared spaces will be used for amenities such as a pool and a recreation center.

The design concept is described as mimicking "the motion of cars along the freeway," (referencing the adjacent I-5) with colored, modular elements in a narrative posted to the GMPA website.

City records list the owner of the development site as an entity connected to Los Angeles-based real estate management firm Miracle Mile Properties.

The original Riverglen apartments, which consists of 160 one-, two-, and three-bedroom units on an adjoining property at Riverside and Glendale Boulevard, opened in 1988.
