Rebar pillars are rising at the intersection of Allesandro Street and Effie Street in Echo Park, where Los Angeles city officials have approved the construction of a new housing development from A.J. Khair Development & Construction.

The project at 1655 N. Allesandro Street, which replaced a warehouse, will eventually consist of a five-story building featuring 41 one- and two-bedroom apartments above at-grade parking for 35 vehicles.

Approved plans rely on Transit Oriented Communities incentives to permit a larger structure than otherwise allowed under zoning rules. In exchange, four of the apartments would be reserved as extremely low-income affordable housing.

GA Engineering is designing the contemporary low-rise building. Plans call for a courtyard, a rear yard, and a rooftop amenity deck.

The project sits just one block south of 1750 N. Glendale Boulevard, where a larger 70-unit apartment complex wrapped up construction in 2021.

Other projects from A.J. Khair include a similar apartment complex recently built in Silver Lake, as well as new hotels proposed for the Sunset Strip and San Pedro.
