A year-and-a-half after commencing work in Hollywood, a new senior affordable housing complex from local developer Thomas Safran & Associates is now fully framed.

Located at 6650 W. Franklin Avenue, the project is an expansion of The Montecito, a 1930s apartment house which the developer converted into senior housing in the 1980s. The older building, where former President Ronald Reagan once lived, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

New construction sits to the east of the existing building, where it replaced a small courtyard and parking lot. The six-story building will feature 67 studio and one-bedroom apartments above a two-level, 57-car garage.

BSB Designs is the architect of the project, which references the Art Deco style of the original  building with clean, vertical lines. Architectural plans show that in addition to housing, the project will include a small courtyard atop its podium deck.

The project sits in close proximity to several newly-completed market-rate developments, including a 118-unit apartment complex at Franklin and Highland, as well as a 224-unit project two blocks south.

Thomas Safran & Associates is developing several affordable housing projects across the Los Angeles area, including a new development that recently broke ground at 3300 Washington Boulevard in Arlington Heights.
