Over one year after breaking ground in Broadway-Manchester, wood framing is on the rise for an housing development from Abode Communities and Neighborhood Housing Services of L.A. County.

The Manchester Urban Homes, now rising on what was a long-vacant site at 8727 S. Broadway, will include 122 homes at completion. The 2.7-acre property will yield a 76-unit apartment building fronting Broadway and 46 townhomes at the rear of the site to the west.

Plans show a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, ranging from 633 to 1,176 square feet in size. At the time of the project's groundbreaking, plans called for the housing to be reserved for renters earning up to 60 percent of the Los Angeles area median income level.

John V. Mutlow Architects, Inc.  is designing the project, which is shown in renderings with an orange, four-story structure and a series of two-story townhomes.

The approximately $84-million development is relying on multiple public funding streams, including $7-million provided by the City of Los Angeles in March 2023. Prior to that, supply chain disruptions and rising interest rates had threatened to delay the project.
