A 1950s single-family home in Westlake is slated to give way to affordable housing, according to a new Executive Directive 1 application filed with the Department of City Planning.

The project from applicant and property owner Jong Tae Kim of 2536 West 5th, LLC, would rise a parcel located two blocks north of MacArthur Park at 2536 W. 5th Street. Plans call for the construction of a seven-story building featuring 65 studio and one-bedroom apartments without on-site parking.

Requested entitlements include density bonus incentives with the provisions of AB 2334 to permit a larger structure with more housing than otherwise allowed by zoning rules. All of the apartments are to be rented by low- and moderate-income households.

Kevin Tsai Architecture is designing 2536 W. 5th Street, which is shown in plans with a contemporary exterior of raked and smooth stucco, accented by wood panels. Plans also call for a rooftop amenity deck.

The project is one of numerous affordable housing developments planned or recently build in walking distance of MacArthur Park, including a 137-unit complex now taking shape a few blocks to the east at 1999 W. 3rd Street.
