Plans for a major production campus in the Arts District are one step closer to reality.

The Los Angeles City Planning Commission voted on February 13 to approve a proposal from East End Studios to redevelop a 15-acre industrial facility at 6th and Alameda Streets with soundstages and production offices. Plans call for approximately 300,000 square feet of offices, 70,000 square feet of studio support spaces, and 16 soundstages.

"The entertainment industry is vital to Los Angeles’ economic health and its identity," said East End Studios managing partner Shep Wainwright in a statement. "While other major cities are adding to their inventory of production space, Los Angeles must do the same. This milestone marks an important step toward bringing this best-in- class studio campus to the Arts District and getting everyone in the entertainment industry back to work."

Grimshaw Architects is designing the East End Studios Arts District campus, which places office space at the northeast and northwest corners of the site at 6th Street's intersections with Mill Street and Alameda Street. Soundstages are oriented toward the center of the block and along the rear of the site.

The site layout is a change from what East End had pitched for the property in 2022, when soundstages had occupied by corners. A statement released last year by Grimshaw Architects indicated that the switch was intended to provide more active spaces at major intersections.

The project is one of three potential studio campuses along the Alameda corridor in the southern Arts District. A couple blocks south at 8th Street, Atlas Capital Group is planning soundstages at the site of the former L.A. Times Olympic printing plant. Prologis has also considered building soundstages on a former Greyhound bus station that it owns at 7th Street.

East End Studios is currently building a $230-million project across the Los Angeles River in Boyle Heights, and has plans for another large project with 10 soundstages along San Fernando Road in Glendale.
