A 112-year-old commercial building in Jefferson Park could be converted into housing, according to new plans unearthed via ATC.
On October 18, preliminary plans were filed with the City of Los Angeles to explore the adaptive reuse of a two-story structure located at 1899 W. Jefferson Boulevard. A project description indicates that the roughly 13,000-square-foot structure would be converted into 15 units of affordable housing, with 11 units on the first floor and 4 units on the second floor.
No other modifications to the building are proposed.
The potential adaptive reuse of 1899 Jefferson is a change from what was being pitched for the site in October 2022, when property owner SAI Housing, LLC had sought to raze and redevelop the property with a six-story, 78-unit affordable housing complex.
The most convenient avenue to realize the ground-up project was stripped away in recent months. Mayor Karen Bass recently issued a revised version of Executive Directive 1 which prohibits its use on sites located within Historic Preservation Overlay Zones. The site at 1899 Jefferson falls into that category.
