A city-owned property in Pacoima could be offered to developers looking to build affordable housing and other community-serving uses, following a vote taken last week by the Los Angeles City Council.

At its meeting last Friday, the Council adopted a motion from 7th District Councilmember Monica Rodriguez, which calls for the city to seek redevelopment options for a property located at 13460 Van Nuys Boulevard. The site, previously home to the MEND Education and Training Center, could see the construction of a mixed-use project featuring affordable housing on its upper floors, and a community kitchen or other community serving use at street level.

The motion from Rodriguez, previously considered by the Council's Housing Committee, calls for the City Administrative Officer and other departments to evaluate the potential for redevelopment the site as proposed by Rodriguez.

Following the evaluation process, the Housing Department would initiate a request for proposals process to seek out developers for the site.

The development site is located midway between Van Nuys Boulevard's intersections with San Fernando Road and Laurel Canyon Boulevard - two future station sites on Metro's East San Fernando Valley light rail line.
