It took a little longer than expected, but a car-free pedestrian plaza is finally taking shape in Westwood Village.
The Westwood Village Improvement Association announced yesterday that work has commenced for Broxton Plaza, which will span between Weyburn Avenue and Kinross Avenue. This one-block stretch of road, already closed regularly each week for farmer's markets and other events, will closed to vehicle traffic starting next month as part of a two-year pilot project.
“In September 2024, Broxton Avenue will be transformed into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly plaza, bringing new energy to Westwood Village,” said Westwood Village Improvement Association executive director Michael Russell in a statement. “With the street closed to vehicle traffic, we are making way for more activities, programs, and events.”
The Improvement Association received approvals from the City of Los Angele last summer for the plaza through its People St Program, which allows communities add plazas, parklets, and other small open space features to their neighborhoods. In the case of Broxton Plaza, planning for the space dates back to 2015, when a petition was circulated seeking support for the project.
The new plaza will be located just two blocks north of the intersection of Wilshire and Westwood Boulevards, where a new subway station is slated to open in 2027 as part of the final phase of Metro's Purple Line extension between Century City and the VA Campus.
