Per an L.A. City neighborhood council notice, developer Abode Communities has been tapped by Metro to redevelop a site currently being used in the construction of the D Line subway extension.
The project, which would rise at the southwest corner of Wilshire and Crenshaw Boulevards, is named "Walnut Crossing." Plans call for the construction of a series of interconnected structures containing a total of 196 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments with ground-floor commercial space and a subterranean parking garage.
Project rents would set at levels considered affordable to households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income level, exclusive of two manager's units.
Koning Eizenberg Architecture is designing the project, which also includes participation from KYCC and TMC Community Capital.
"The project concept honors the Park Mile Specific Plan, with boulevard-scale massing along Wilshire stepping down to a neighborhood scale to the south," reads a narrative from the Abode website. "At the southern elevation, preserved Walnut trees and new landscaping shield single-family homes from the multifamily residential above. Separation between project buildings creates a scale that echoes the grain of the adjacent neighborhood. Ground-level articulation and materials selection play an integral role connecting the site to the neighborhood and respond to the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone."
The completed project will include 4,540 square feet of community space, 1,500 square feet of retail, 14,700 square feet of public space, 6,500 square feet of offices, and parking for 135 vehicles, according to information submitted to Metro for its request for proposals.
