Weeks after quietly starting site preparation, a groundbreaking ceremony with Jamboree Housing Corporation and Long Beach city officials marks the official start of work on a new affordable housing complex just east of the A Line.
The 101, named for its location at 101 E. Pacific Coast Highway, will eventually consist of a five-story building featuring 52 one- and two-bedroom apartments above parking for 20 vehicles.
The apartments are to be reserved for renters earning up to 30 percent of the area median income level, and monthly rents are not to exceed $852 based on current figures for Los Angeles County.
Y&M Architects is designing The 101, which is depicted in renderings as a contemporary podium-type building. Besides housing, plans call for a community room, offices for on-site staff, and an outdoor green area.
Financing for the more than $40-million project includes a mix of state, local, and private sources.
Although much of Jamboree Housing's work occurs in Orange County, the developer is also active at several locations across the Los Angeles area, including on a Metro-adjacent property in Duarte.
