Los Angeles County is moving to purchase an empty lot next to the A Line in Downtown Long Beach to redevelop it with affordable housing, per a new environmental notice.

The approximately 28,500-square-foot property at 1101 Long Beach Boulevard, which would be acquired and developed as part of the County's Land Bank Pilot Program, abuts the A Line's Anaheim Street Station, sits directly south of an existing affordable housing complex - Century Housing's 160-unit Beacon Pointe apartments. The County is targeting the construction of a similar project at the 1101 Long Beach property, consisting of an approximately 90-foot-tall building with 160 apartments, 2,800 square feet of community-serving commercial space, and a 3,000-square-foot amenity room for residents.

The exact unit mix, as well as the target affordability level, has not been set at this point in time.

Pending partnership with a developer, as well as identifying construction financing, the apartment complex could be built over a period of approximately two-years.

The project site was previously slated the construction of an eight-story, 120-unit apartment building with ground-floor retail space. That project, approved in 2018, would have offered market-rate housing.

Other developments in the work nearby include a mixed-use apartment complex slated for a property a short walk to the east at 400 E. Anaheim Street.
