A proposal which would bring housing, medical research space, and a sports complex to publicly-owned land in Willowbrook is also set to benefit from public funding, following a vote taken by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
On June 25, the Board voted to adopt a motion from 2nd District Supervisor Holly Mitchell which calls for setting aside up to $10 million in No Place Like Home program funds for the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Wellness Campus, which would rise from a 12-acre sit consisting of the former Lincoln Elementary School campus and an adjoining property at 1655 E. 117th Street.
The project, which would be developed in partnership with Thomas Safran & Associates and Century Housing Corporation, calls for the construction of:
- 254 units of affordable housing (including 54 units for seniors);
- 333 units of workforce and student housing; 116,000 square feet of offices which would be used for research and clinical space;
- a sports complex with basketball courts, aquatic facilities, and a multi-purpose soccer field; and
- a parking garage.
According to Mitchell's motion, the new affordable housing is to be reserved for renters earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income level. The apartments would come in a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings.
Construction of the affordable housing is to be carried out over three phases, the first of which would include two buildings featuring a combined 94 apartments and 48 parking stalls, which would be reserved for families. The second phase of construction would consist of two additional family-buildings, this time with a combined total of 106 apartments and 54 parking spaces. The third and final phase would consist of a single 54-unit building for seniors, accompanied by 27 parking spaces.
The development team and the County are still in the midst of a negotiating period, and a precise timeline for delivery of the new housing has not been announced.
