A vote taken on April 9 by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved upwards of $106 million in funding for new affordable housing developments in the Gateway Cities and the South Bay. The three projects, planned in the cities of Downey and  Santa Fe Springs, as well as the unincorporated community of El Camino Village, would combine to create roughly 220 units of affordable and permanent supportive housing.

The first, a joint effort from Abode Communities and PATH Ventures, would rise from the former site of the American Legion Hollydale Post site in at 11269 Garfield Avenue in Downey. The project, names Veterans Commons, calls for the construction of three new buildings featuring 100 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, as well as amenities such as a courtyard, a barbeque area, a play area for children, a rooftop garden, and a community room. On-site offices for case managers are also planned.

According to a motion from Supervisor Janice Hahn, the target population for Veterans Commons will be homeless veterans earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income level and families earning between 50 and 60 percent of the area median income level.

The vote by the Board of Supervisors approves up to $44 million in bond financing for the project.
