In a vote taken earlier today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a lease agreement with developers Abode Communities and PATH Ventures for the former American Legion Hollydale Post site in Downey, allowing the proposed Veterans Commons project to move forward.
The project site, a vacant lot located at 11269 Garfield Avenue, is slated for the construction of a 94,000-square-foot building containing 100 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, as well as a children's play area, a barbeque area, a rooftop garden, community courtyards, offices for staff, and parking for 70 vehicles.
The apartments at the Veteran Commons project would be reserved for households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income level, according to a staff report. Half of the apartments are to be set aside as supportive housing for veterans experiencing homelessness.
Veteran Commons, according to a project website, is also expected to include a 4,400-square-foot ground floor workforce development hub serving residents and the surrounding communities.
Abode Communities and PATH Ventures are both active developers of affordable and permanent supportive housing in Los Angeles, including new projects now under construction in Hollywood, West Carson, Glendale, and West Adams.
