Months after starting work in Gardena, wood framing has reached its peak for a new single-room occupancy apartment complex from Cocoon.
The project, located on the former site of an automobile repair shop at 13126 S. Western Avenue, is a four-story structure that will feature 121 apartments with parking for 120 vehicles. All of the apartments will be 350 square feet in size, including a kitchen and a bathroom.
DE Architects is designing the project, which will include a courtyard, a pool, and a fitness room. Street-fronting units are planned along the ground level.
"Since the adjacent blocks consist of 1 and 2 story industrial buildings, the project is designed to create its own pedestrian oriented urban context, as well as a provide a base context for potential future residential projects," reads a narrative provided to the City of Gardena in 2022. "The building mass is stepped from 4 stories to 2 stories at the northeast corner, to act as a transition to the scale of the surrounding neighborhood."
Cocoon previously built two smaller developments in Gardena at two sites along Normandie Avenue.
