The Pasadena Design Commission recently took another look at plans from Caltech to build a new research and development facility on its campus in Pasadena.

The project, which is being developed for the school by Trammell Crow Company, would rise from a property at 1364 E. Green Street. Plans call for the construction of a four-story building containing 93,539 square feet of office and laboratory space above a three-level, 260-car subterranean parking garage on what is now a surface parking lot.

Gensler is designing the contemporary low-rise structure, which features a grid-like exterior.

"The proposed building is designed in a contemporary style within a rectilinear form that features a flat roof and expansive glazing set within frames and accented with metal panels and spandrels," reads a staff report. "The front elevation facing East Green Street depicts a repeated fenestration pattern, while the remaining elevations are subtly differentiated through the shifting/staggering of the metal panels and their size to address solar orientation."

The report recommended approval of the design concept.

The new building from Trammell Crow Company follows two recent additions built by Caltech on its campus, including the Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement (now under construction along California Boulevard) and the Resnick Sustainability Center.
