A tower crane located two blocks west of Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena signals the rise of a new medical office building across the street from Huntington Hospital.

The project, now rising at 590 Fair Oaks Avenue, replaces a small commercial building and a surface parking with a new four-story edifice that will feature roughly 100,000 square feet of medical offices above subterranean parking for 212 vehicles.

Smith Group is designing the project, which was previously described in a staff report to the Pasadena Design Commission as having a contemporary style, with a commanding presence at the intersection of Fair Oaks and California Boulevard. Plans call for a metallic ribbon which would wrap the building, as well as a new east-west pedestrian paseo at street level to the south.

City records list the project applicant as La Canada-based 590 Fair Oaks Development, LLC, which is managed by Mohammed J. Islam.

The proposed development is one of a handful of new medical office buildings planned on the blocks surrounding Huntington Hospital, joining similar projects planned on Fair Oaks, Alessandro Place, and Raymond Avenue. More medical offices are slated to accompany a proposed senior apartment complex within The Affinity, a mixed-use development slated for Arroyo Parkway's intersection with California Avenue.
