In her ongoing quest to find unconventional opportunities for new park space in Koreatown, 10th District Councilmember Heather Hutt has set her sites on a street segment on the western side of the neighborhood.
In a motion introduced this week, Hutt suggests that the spur of 8th Street which branches off from the main corridor at Western Avenue could be vacated and converted into park space. Hutt notes that while the spur provides vehicular access and street parking, it does not provide vehicular access to any adjacent properties.
"The City needs to consider all options in Koreatown to create more open space, including converting public right of way into parklets," reads Hutt's motion. "Development of a parklet at this site could allow for the creation o f additional green space of at least 15,000 square feet for community use."
The motion directs that the Bureau of Engineering, Department of Recreation and Parks, and other city agencies report back with recommendations for converting the 8th Street spur into a parklet at a ufture date. The item was referred to the Parks and Public Works Committees for review.
While Koreatown has relatively few parks, new open space is being added at the Pio Pico Library and on a parcel at 4th Street and Kingsley Avenue. Likewise, Hutt has proposed the acquisition of several nearby properties to preserve as open space.
The 8th Street site sits along a busy corridor which has recently seen the developmen tof several large mixed-use apartment buildings, includign and adjacent property at 800 S. Western Avenue.
