In Echo Park, rebar and concrete are rising for a new permanent supportive housing complex from SRO Housing Corp.

The project at 707-721 N. Alvarado Street, named Alvarado Kent for its cross streets, will eventually consist of a six-story building featuring 81 apartments - 80 of which would be studio units set aside for low-income households - above parking for 32 vehicles. Plans also call for a community kitchen, a lounge, a computer room, laundry facilities, and on-site supportive services.

Egan Simon Architecture is designing building, which is depicted in renderings with a contemporary exterior painted white and blue. Architectural plans show common amenities including a community room, a recreation room, and outdoor decks.

According to the SRO Housing website, the project will cater to chronic homeless persons with mental illnesses, homeless veterans earning 30 percent or less than the area median income level, and general low-income persons earning 60 percent or less than the area median income level.

A February 2022 application for tax credit financing estimated an approximately $43.2 million cost for the project, translating to a price tag of roughly $533,000 per unit. That application also estimated that the property would be completed in July 2024, with all units to be occupied by the end of 2024.

A social media post from Egan Simon indicates that Westport Construction is serving as the project's general contractor.

Other recent projects from SRO Housing include the Ingraham Apartments and the Hartford Villa Apartments - a pair of permanent supportive housing projects located just west of Downtown Los Angeles in the Westlake community.
