On November 15, Metro and developers East L.A. Community Corp. and Bridge Housing Corp. held a completion ceremony for the Los Lirios apartments in Boyle Heights.
The Metro joint development, built next to the E Line's Soto Station at 113 S. Soto Street, consists of a five-story building featuring 64 apartments and 2,400 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The apartments come in a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans, and including supportive housing and general affordable housing reserved for renters earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income level.
"In Boyle Heights, as well as many neighborhoods in the First District, the need for affordable housing for low- and middle-income families has never been more urgent. Many of our residents also rely on public transportation or alternative means of travel in order to get to school and work,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, who also sits on the Metro board. “Over a decade in the making, the development and opening of Los Lirios demonstrates the positive impact Metro's Joint Development program will have on a better quality of life for our County, especially for those in our most vulnerable communities."
In addition to housing, the apartment complex include offices for on-site services (provided by ELACC and PATH Ventures), a gym, laundry facilities, a community room, a courtyard, and a children's play area.
Practice, formerly Gonzalez Goodale, designed the contemporary podium-type building.
The project is the second completed by Metro this year in Boyle Heights, following the La Veranda development a few blocks north at Soto Street and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. Another Boyle Heights project, the 49-unit Lorena Plaza development, is set to be opened by Metro next year, and followed by a joint development next to Mariachi Plaza.
Metro has set a goal of building 10,000 total homes on properties it owns across the region by 2031.
