The Sixth Street Viaduct may have gone dark on account of copper wire thieves, but the 12 acres of promised green space below the landmark L.A. River crossing is starting to shape up, based on new photography by Gary Leonard.

The Sixth Street Viaduct PARC, an acronym for "Park, Arts, and River Connectivity," will include seven acres of park spaces on the west bank of the river in the Arts District and an additional five acres on the east bank in Boyle Heights.

Designed by Hargreaves Jones is designing PARC, the more than $82-million project will have different functions depending on the side of the river. On the east side, PARC will be a more community-oriented park space, featuring sports fields and courts, picnic areas, and event space. Meanwhile, the Arts District will include a performance lawn, a dog park, and fitness equipment.

Also included in the project is Leonard Hill Arts Plaza, located directly below the bridge which is named for the late partner at Linear City who donated money for the project.

At the time of the project's ceremonial groundbreaking back in mid-2022, the Bureau of Engineering that construction would take roughly two-and-a-half years to be completed.

The viaduct will serve as an anchor to new developments taking shape in the southern Arts District, including a Bjarke Ingels-designed tower complex which would rise near Leonard Hill Art Plaza. It would also connect to planned transportation improvements along the river corridor, including a proposed extension of the Los Angeles River bike path and a future stop on Metro's B and D Lines at 6th Street.
