A 2021 state grant promoting infrastructure improvements near affordable housing developments will soon bear fruit in South Los Angeles.
According to a notice issued by the City of Los Angeles, construction is set to begin for new streetscape and active transportation infrastructure on corridors surrounding the Parkview development, which was built by Thomas Safran & Associates at 4020 Compton Avenue. The range of improvements will include
- sidewalk reconstruction;
- upgrades to and installations of curb ramps;
- street trees;
- driveway replacements;
- 16 high-visibility crosswalks;
- two rectangular flashing beacon signals;
- two speed feedback signals;
- one pedestrian leading interval signal;
- 17 new streetlights;
- five miles of Class III bicycle routes;
- two miles of Class IV protected bicycle lanes; and
- a new neighborhood traffic circle.
The new protected bicycle lanes are proposed along both sides of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Main Street and Central Avenue, while the Class III routes would span other segments of MLK Boulevard, East 41st Street, Wadsworth Avenue, and Compton Avenue. The traffic circle is to be built at MLK's intersection with Morgan Avenue.
Construction is poised to begin in May 2025 and be completed by June 2026.
